Fiction Galore!!!

Hey...this blog has been so far completely bereft of Literature...so here are 3 fairly easy questions to kick off...

1. “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it. Their faithful Friend and Servant,_______ .December, 1843.”

This is the starting foreword of which famous book? (The blank space is the initials of the author.) Name both the author and the book.

2. Captain Hastings (narrator in the first few Poirot books) meets his future wife in a train in the second book Murder on the Links. He is very much infatuated with her throughout the book and aids her escape when Poirot suspects her of a crime. She eventually is found innocent and redeems herself by saving all their lives. Her actual name is mentioned later in the books. By what name does she introduce herself to Hastings?

3. In the Hardy Boys series, Iola Morton (sister of Chet Morton, best friend of The Hardy Boys) is initially the girlfriend of Joe Hardy till she dies in a book. Who replaces her as Joe’s girlfriend in later books?

Answers -
1. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens...An easy one...The blank is C.D, his initials.
2. She introduces herself as Cinderella.
3. Vanessa Bender.

Two Toughies

Its been a while, so.............

1. For those who love hardcore sport, who is the only footballer to have scored in the Manchester, Merseyside and Glasgow derbies? Think of those goddamn Russians.

2. And for those who dont really like sport : Who said about whom?
"God gave men both a penis and a brain, but unfortunately not enough blood supply to run both at the same time."
The "who" in the questions aint easy, but the "whom" is.

Beating The Trap

Continuing with the sports flavour, here's a set on the world's favorite sport. Enjoy !!

1. He was originally nicknamed Dico. A prolific goalscorer, he is the leading goalscorer for his country in international matches. According to him, the most beautiful goal that he had ever scored was in a match against Juventus (sadly no footage of that goal exists). Incidentally, he is also the first sports personality to be featured in a video game. He holds the record for the most career titles won( he won 32 ) . Identify this very iconic footballer.

2. Identify this footballer.
3. He was named as one of the 125 greatest football players still alive in 2004. He played most of his football outside of his home country, representing clubs such as AS Monaco, Saint-Etienne and Montpellier among others. He came out of retirement and almost single-handedly led his country to its best performance in World cup history in 1990. His claim to fame, however, is a goal that he scored against Russia. Name the footballer described.

Connect the above 3 footballers.

ANSWERS

1. Pele
2. Franz Beckenbauer
3. Roger Milla

The connect is Mohun Bagan. Pele was a part of the New York Cosmos team which played against MB in 1977. Roger Milla came to India with Diamont Club in 1990 to play against Bagan as part of their centenary celebrations. Beckenbauer is synonymous with Bayern Munich which came here recently to play against Bagan.

Decent response to the set. Almost all cracked the questions but failed at the connect part. Questions cracked correctly by Lord labak das, immigrant (interesting connect i must say) , E.T. and Ajay.

From Sophia with Deadly Love....

Identify this deadly device. It has been used twice and worked only once, but it is a very clever creation

This is the Bulgarian Umbrella. This was used twice, once effectively to kill Georgi Markov on the London Waterloo Bridge. The method involves an umbrella specially designed to shoot out a poisoned bullet(Ricin used here) to kill a person. It was discontinued since the assassin would have to get too close to the victim and ricin was also unstable at certain temperatures(either doesn't work or might affect the handler)

rand();

In China, the terms "yǔhángyuán" or "hángtiānyuán" have long been used for X. The phrase "tàikōng rén" is often used in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Official English texts issued by the government of the People's Republic of China use X, while the slightly uncommon term Y is used by some English-language news media organizations for professional X's from China.
Y has featured in the Longman and Oxford English dictionaries, the latter of which describes it as "a hybrid of the Chinese term ______ and the Greek word for traveller, or X".
Chen Lin, a linguistics professor at the Beijing Foreign Studies University described Y's recognition as "another sign of China's growing global influence".
Also, (though i very much doubt it would help) Y was coined in 1988.

Identify X and Y (and if you want, the blank)
